Gladiators Season Ends with 2-0 LossWednesday, April 23, 2008.

The Gwinnett Gladiators season comes to a close with a 2-0 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 5 of the Division Semifinals at the North Charleston Coliseum on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Gladiators are bounced out of the 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Gwinnett was blanked for the first time in the postseason this year in the loss.Gwinnett gave up the first goal of a game for the first time during the 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs as South Carolina took a 1-0 lead on Gwinnett just 2:53 into the first period. Matt Scherer threw a puck at Gladiators netminder Craig Kowalski to notch the goal for South Carolina. Kowalski looked to deflected the puck away from the net but instead redirected the puck into the net as it took a wierd bounce and eluded the netminder. Scott Romfo and Stingrays netminder Davis Parley collected the assists on the goal.South Carolina took a 2-0 lead on the Gladiators with a power play goal 11 minutes into the second period. In a scramble in front of the Gwinnett net, Travis Morin found the loose puck in a gaggle of skates and sticks and flicked it over Kowalski’s outstretched pad for the marker. Cail MacLean and Sean Collins notched the assists on the power play goal for the Stingrays. The Stingrays clamped down defensively in the third period preventing Gwinnett from getting on the board as Parley came up with everything Gwinnett threw at the South Carolina net. After just 13 shots through the first two periods, the Gladiators posted 20 shots in the final period but could not get a marker in the contest. Gwinnett went 0-for-4 on the power play while South Carolina went 1-for-4 on the man advantage in the contest.Kowalski notched 23 saves in the losing effort while Parley collected 33 saves in the win for South Carolina. The Shutout loss was the first shutout against Gwinnett in the post season since Charlotte posted a 3-0 win over the Gladiators in the clinching game of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs to knock the Gladiators out that season. The Gladiators concluded their fifth anniversary season with a 2-0 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 5 of the Division Semifinals.

Go Glad's Game 5

2007-2008 ECHL KELLY CUP PLAYOFFS!

WINNER TAKE ALL TONIGHT IN CHARLESTONGladiators Take Game Four with 3 – 0 Win

To Force Deciding Game FiveGame 5 Viewing Party tonight at Bogey’s
Remember the great line from Animal House? The one where Bluto goes - Over? Did you say “Over?” Nothing is over until we decide it is. Well – with last night’s dominating 3 – 0 win over the South Carolina Stingrays, the Glads have forced a deciding Game 5 in the South Division Semi-Finals. Whoever wins tonight’s game in North Charleston will advance to take on the winner of the Texas Wildcatters / Columbia Inferno in the South Division Finals.

In last night’s victory, the Gladiators opened up the scoring in the second period on a power play goal by defenseman Jamie Milam. Milo’s shot hit South Carolina goalie Josh Johnson, flipped past him and then slid slowly into the net to give the Glads the first lead of the game. Gwinnett then added two more goals in the period – one from defenseman Scott Marchesi (his first professional goal) and another from Bryson Busniuk. The last two goals added extra insurance, but the first one was the only one necessary as Gladiator goaltender Craig Kowalski stoned the Stingrays and posted his second shut-out of the post-season.

So, it’s winner take all in Charleston, South Carolina tonight. If you would like to come out and enjoy the game with the Gladiators staff and fans – please come join us tonight at Bogey’s Sports Pub on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Bogey’s will be broadcasting the game live beginning at 7:00 PM.

Game 3: Monday, April 21 Gwinnett 4-South Carolina 1
Game 4: Tuesday, April 22 Gwinnett 3-South Carolina 0
Game 5: Wednesday, April 23 @ South Carolina-7:05 PM

Should the Gladiators advance, their opponent in the South Division Finals will be either the Texas Wildcatters or the Columbia Inferno. Texas currently leads that series 2 games to 1, with Game 4 to be played tonight in Columbia. Scheduling for that series has yet to be finalized, but please stay tuned to www.gwinnettgladiators.com for additional information.

Forming D2 team for 2008 Sunshine Shootout

Mike Friedman of the Firebirds is trying to put together a MASHA D2-level team for the Sunshine Shoot-Out tournament in Tampa this June (21st & 22nd). We're looking for anybody that's interested, but specifically for D2 level players, for those that want to travel, but may not be good enough for the D1 travel team. Of course, D1 players are certainly welcome if they are interested.

The facility is indoors, so you don't need to worry about rainouts or extreme Florida heat. For those interested, there's a Hard Rock Casino in Tampa with a massive poker room.

We'd like to get a squad of about 10 players and a goalie to have at least two lines. The team fee is $550, so if we get the 11 people to go, it'll only be $50 a person. There's 4 games gauranteed, and the tourney will divided into three division brackets after an initial open round-robin.

Please email mdfriedman@gmail.com if you are interested in playing.
